Purpose

With text-to-image programs like DALL-E revolutionizing artistic production speed, it may seem creative automation is imminent. But when AI is fed a prompt, it makes generalizations from user averages on the Internet, producing “art” that is soulless and uninspired. By founding Alpha Centauri Magazine, we hope to protect and nurture originality in Gen Alpha creatives.

Gen Alpha are AI natives, so we must be deliberate in cultivating their artistic process. They must experience the struggle to create, that submission to the whims of inspiration and develop the discipline to execute fleeing ideas. The experience of art requires communion with its creator, and while we may enjoy an AI-generated poem or image as amusing, a machine cannot create art because a machine does not know what it is to exist, to agonize, to suffer.

Unlike algorithms, humans have agency, and we must enlist Gen Alpha in the fight against the ChatGPT dystopia. By encouraging young artists to value the process of creation and eschew the tempting shortcuts that erode their very humanity, we hope to ensure that art not only survives, but actually thrives in a post AI renaissance.
